npower renewables has delivered a range of community benefits in association with its operating wind farms. These measures benefit those communities living closest to each wind farm, and have to date included energy efficiency measures, schools education programmes, local event sponsorships, equipment for schools, youth groups and sports clubs, and repair works to village halls and other community buildings. A community fund has been established at Bears Down Wind Farm to benefit the local area over the life of the scheme and is worth in the region of £300,000 to the community.
Energy Efficiency
In early 2001, npower renewables, working with Community Energy Plus, implemented a £30,000 energy efficiency advice scheme funded by Bears Down Wind Farm.
Andrew Tanner, Education for Sustainability Consultant, visited 19 local schools throughout Restormel and North Cornwall on behalf of npower renewables to deliver sustainable energy workshops to some 2000 pupils.
The workshops were interactive, interesting and fun enabling pupils to learn all about energy - where it comes from, how it is used, the environmental consequences of burning fossil fuel and nuclear power stations, renewable energy and ways to conserve electricity.

There were practicals and hands-on demonstrations to really inspire an understanding that will lead young people to become energy wise and enthusiastic about creating a sustainable future.
An annual community fund of £3000 (index linked) has been established to benefit the wider community over the life of the wind farm. To date these funds have supported a number of groups including local sports clubs, senior citizens days out, local theatrical events, churches and a local environmental enhancement scheme.
