Bryn Titli Wind Farm is owned and operated by npower renewables and was completed
in 1994. It is located between Rhayader and Llangurig above the A470 on improved and
semi-natural grazing pasture.
The wind farm covers an area of over 1,000 hectares (ha) but only 2.5ha are used
by the turbines and access tracks. It is constructed on a plateau just to the north
of a Site of Special Scientific Interest; this was a major factor in the environmental
assessment of the project and care was taken in planning the wind farm to avoid
areas of ecological interest and to minimise its effect on the local environment.
Construction routes have been reinstated and a land management programme,
administered through Countryside Commission for Wales, has been established
to reduce grazing and improve the wildlife
habitat on the plateau.
The region is used as a hunting area for Red Kite and Merlin and also supports
Red Grouse, Snipe, Curlew and Buzzard. A pre- and post-construction bird monitoring
programme has been carried out by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB)
and the results have showed that the effect of the wind farm on birds has been minimal.
