Hellrigg Wind Farm Proposal
Plans for a wind farm at Hellrigg have been refused by Allerdale Borough
Council.
The 4 turbine wind farm on farm land to the south west of Silloth, could
produce enough green electricity to power approximately 4000 homes.
Clare Wilson, Regional Development Manager said, "We are disappointed with
the decision and feel that insufficient emphasis has been put on the
overwhelming need to tackle climate change through a shift to low carbon
energy generation.
"There is overwhelming consensus across the globe that climate change is
happening, and that left unchecked, it will have disastrous impacts on
people and places everywhere. Without changes to the way we generate and
consume electricity the situation is only going to get worse.
"We cannot afford to be half-hearted in our attempts to combat climate
change, today marks a lost opportunity for Allerdale Borough Council to make
a positive and forward-thinking decision to protect our environment for
future generations.
"We believe that Hellrigg is a good wind farm site, which has the potential
to power some 4,000 local homes without producing polluting carbon dioxide
gas. We will now consider our options before deciding whether or not to
appeal the Council's decision."
