Kielder Water is Northern Europe's largest man made lake. It houses the Kielder Hydrolectric plant which is one of the latest sites to be added to the npower renewables portfolio.
Located in central Northumberland about 10 miles from the village of Bellingham, England's biggest hydroelectric power station is owned by Northumbrian Water. In December 2004 npower renewables bought the rights to operate, maintain and sell the energy for 20 years.
The turbine house is located just below the Kielder dam and is powered by dual turbines capable of producing just over 6 megawatts of green power. The water held by Kielder Reservoir is used to help regulate flow into the River Tyne and North Tyne and is closely monitored by the Environment Agency.
