Kirkby Moor Wind Farm was completed in September 1993. It consists of 12 wind turbines
each with a maximum output of 400 kilowatts (kW) manufactured by Vestas A/S of Denmark.
It is located on an upland heather moor approximately 4km from Ulverston, within a Site
of Special Scientific Interest. It was developed and is operated by npower renewables.
The wind farm covers an area of 150 hectares of moorland owned by Holker Estates
but the turbines themselves take up less than 1% of that land.
npower renewables worked closely with English Nature and South Lakeland District
Council to design the wind farm to avoid areas of particular ecological value, and
to draw up construction methods to preserve the ecology of the site. The site roads
have been restored using harvested vegetation, and the wind farm site was subjected
to a five year monitoring and restoration programme. Environmental consultants were
employed throughout construction and during the restoration programme and it is hoped
that the existing condition of the moorland will be further enhanced.
