Inauguration
The wind farm was officially opened by local winners of a school drawing competition run by npower renewables. The 4 winners and 1 merit award winner from Old Hutton Primary School and Grayrigg Primary School, each had one of the 1.3 megawatt (MW) turbines named after them and were given the honour of starting the last wind turbine to officially open the wind farm.

A wide variety of people attended the event including members of the South Lakeland District Council, representatives of the parish councils and meetings, contractors and consultants who had been involved in the project and David Bramble, Assistant Director, Renewable Energy Programmes, Department of Trade and Industry.

Acknowledging those in attendance, Alan Moore, managing director at npower renewables, said, "The fact that we have such a wide range of people gathered here today is especially pleasing. They represent both the national and local perspectives and indicate how renewable energy schemes such as this have to span global imperatives, national objectives and local concerns. That is no easy thing to do, but it is something to which National Wind Power is fully committed. I am proud to say, it is something that is well illustrated by the Lambrigg project."

With just five 1.3MW turbines, Lambrigg Wind Farm will supply the average electricity needs of about 4,000 homes with clean, sustainable electricity every year. Every renewable energy project built is a significant step towards the Government's target to reduce the UK's carbon dioxide emissions by 20% by 2010. If the UK is to meet this challenge then more renewable energy schemes such as this one are needed.

Palle Norgaard, managing director of Bonus Energy A/S who supplied the project with the turbines said, "There is considerable evidence that large wind turbines are the right course to adopt when speaking of electricity production today and in the future. Economically, the large wind turbines are much more competitive than the turbines that were manufactured only a few years ago"

The guests were invited to look around the Furness Energy Partnership Mobile Advice Centre which was on show with information about renewable energy and energy efficiency measures. An exhibition was available at the Hotel and included stands from Innogy plc, National Wind Power, DavidMcLean Construction and Agrilek Ltd.
