npower renewable's involvement with Llyn Alaw began in late 1996,
when it took over the project from a consortium originally led by Manweb which
had obtained planning permission in January 1995. NWP gained full planning consent
from Anglesey County Council in December 1996 for 34 larger and more up-to-date turbines.
These turbines were supplied by Bonus A/S of Denmark, with ten of the turbine towers
manufactured by Cambrian Engineering at Bangor. Llyn Alaw Wind Farm was completed in
October 1997 and has a combined maximum power of 20.4MW
It is located on private land at Llanbabo, between Llanddeusant and Rhosgoch,
on the island of Anglesey and was developed and operated by NWP Ltd. It is one
of three farms on Anglesey that, together provide enough clean electricity to meet
the annual needs of about 10,600 homes - the equivalent of about 70% of all the homes
on this island.
The wind farm covers an area of 300 hectares but the turbines themselves
only take up 1% of that land. It is located at an altitude of about 70 metres
above sea level and its immediate environment consists of farmland used for
light grazing.
Care was taken in planning the wind farm to minimise its effect on the local
environment. Farming continued around the site during construction and since restoration,
has continued with minimal disruption.
