Plans for hydroelectric power scheme capable of powering up to 1000 homes have been approved by Scottish Ministers.
npower renewables, one of the UK's leading renewable energy developers submitted a planning application in October 2005 for the 1.5 megawatt run of river scheme at Carnoch, near Loch Sunart.
The Carnoch Hydro scheme will be located on the south side of Glen Tarbet, 3.5 km from Strontian and 30 km from Fort William. It will be directly opposite the company's existing Glen Tarbet Hydro Scheme which is on the north side of the river.
Bill MacGregor, the Scottish Hydro Development Manager said: "This is excellent news for the company and the renewables industry in general. Once built, Carnoch will be our twelfth scheme in Scotland since 2000, maintaining our position as a leading developer of small hydro schemes in the country.
"Carnoch already has a grid connection, a water licence and a signed option agreement, all the main components we need to move forward to construction. We would hope to start building in 2008."
