npower renewables1 is pleased to announce that the wind power division of Siemens Power Generation (PG)2, formerly Bonus Energy A/S, has been awarded the contract to supply 40 wind turbines for Farr Wind Farm project, located 10 miles south of Inverness, Scotland.
The contract with Siemens PG for 40, 2.3 megawatt (MW) turbines confirms Farr Wind Farm's capacity at 92MW. Once completed Farr will be npower renewables' most powerful wind farm, capable of supplying enough electricity for over 53,000 homes, equal to around two-thirds of all homes in the Scottish Highlands3. Farr will also help reduce emissions of the main greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, by some 216,000 tonnes each year.
Construction has already begun on site, with the Forestry Commission of Scotland currently completing the site access tracks. Siemens PG will be supplying the turbines and sub-contracting the civils work shortly, which will begin in March 2005. The construction period is expected to last around 12 months.
Kevin McCullough, Director of npower renewables, said, "We are pleased to have placed this contract and are looking forward to progressing the site. It will be very satisfying to see Farr take shape over the coming year and see the work of all those involved with this project finally come to fruition."
"Farr is an excellent wind farm. It has high wind speeds, is outside International, National and Highland Council designations for landscape and ecology, and it is close to the electricity grid," added Mr McCullough.
Andreas Nauen, Head of the Wind Power Division of Siemens Power Generation said, "We are pleased that our technology has been selected for the Farr project. This new order underlines our strong market position in the growing market for wind power systems in the United Kingdom."
npower renewables currently operates 4 wind farms in Scotland with a total combined capacity of 95.3MW. The Farr project, once operational, will make a significant contribution towards Scotland's renewable energy targets.
