Lincolnshire's windy coastline could help in the fight against climate change. npower renewables hopes to build on the county's wind power heritage and believes the site near Langham could make a valuable contribution towards slowing global warming.
The UK's most experienced wind energy company considers the Langham site, on land between Anderby and Chapel St Leonards, may be suitable for up to 6 wind turbines. That's enough to meet the average annual electricity needs of up to 7,100 homes, or more than three-quarters of Skegnessnote1.
At the end of August, this year, the WWF warned, "Major storm surges will have destructive impacts on coastal areas.. causing flooding events in the East of England"note2 while the Government's Chief Scientific Advisor Sir David King says climate change, "is the most severe problem that we are facing today, more serious even than the threat of terrorism." The potential development at Langham could offset the release of 28,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, one of the main greenhouse gases, every year.
Developer Kim Gauld-Clark from npower renewables said, "The windy conditions make the Lincolnshire coast an ideal location for wind farms and it has an important role in the fight against climate change. Work on the Langham project is at an early stage, but we are very enthusiastic about the scheme."
"Onshore wind is the most viable renewable resource available if we are to meet national government targets of 10% of our electricity coming from renewable sources by 2010. The site at Langham shows many preliminary signs that it may be suitable to help reach that obligation. However we must conclude many studies before deciding whether to submit a planning application" added Ms Gauld-Clark.
Over the coming months npower renewables will hold public exhibitions so that residents can learn more about the details of the project and the benefits of renewable energy. If the site is believed to be appropriate, the company will keep the public informed.
