    River E Hydro Scheme

The River E hydro scheme is located within the Corriegarth Estate, which is primarily a sporting estate with shooting for deer and grouse approximately 16km north east of Fort Augustus. The 3MW scheme is a run of river scheme, exploiting the water in the River E.

River E has a catchment of approximately 16km2 and extracts water from the River E at an intake which feeds an 800mm diameter glass reinforced plastic (GRP) buried pipeline, approximately 4km long, to a powerhouse located close to the River E, approximately 1km upstream of its outfall to Loch Mhor.

The turbine discharges through a short buried tailrace pipe back to the River E. The twin jet horizontally shafterd Pelton turbine has a capacity of 3MW utilising a head of 287m. This head is the highest in the UK constructed with glass reinforced plastic pipe. Output from the scheme is connected to the 33kV distribution network spur at Garthbeg by a buried cable.

Construction of the scheme started in October 2006 and the scheme was commissioned in November 2007.
