Romney Weir Hydro Project
npower renewables is pleased to announce that on July 2005, The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Planning Authority granted full consent to build the Romney Weir Hydroelectric Scheme.
Located adjacent to the bank of Romney Island, between Windsor and Eton, the scheme has been designed to provide power directly to Windsor Castle, and contribute to a range of sustainable energy solutions in which the Royal Household has taken an active interest.
The development would be housed in two of the 10 bays that make up Romney Weir, with each of the two bays housing two submerged low head propeller turbines, powered by the natural flow of water through the weir. A cut-away diagram and photomontages of the scheme can be seen by clicking on the boxes to the right.
Together, the four turbines would have an installed capacity of 200 kilowatts, generating an amount of clean electricity each year equivalent to around one-third of the current electricity needs of Windsor Castle.
