Wave and tidal power technologies are collectively termed 'marine renewables'. There is increasing interest in these technologies as they present further opportunities to generate renewable electricity.
As an island nation, the UK is blessed with some of the most energetic wave and tidal resources in the world. The DTI recently quantified this resource through the Atlas of Marine Renewable Energy Resources, which illustrates the different types of resource and where the most energetic locations are. For more detailed information on this work, follow the link to the DTI website to the right of the page.
The challenge is being able to harness this energy in our seas. Following a long period of technology development, with many different concepts being developed, the sector is beginning to mature. Many believe that marine renewables could be delivering clean energy to our homes and businesses in the near future.

npower renewables is supporting the development of the marine renewables industry in a number of ways.
The company is currently investigating the potential for a wave scheme to be located on the coast near the village of Siadar on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. For further information on this exciting new project click on the icon to the right of the screen titled "Siadar Wave Power Project".
The company is also supporting research and development of marine renewables through the npower juice fund. Click on the npower juice fund link to the left of this page to find out more.
