Government Policy in Scotland
"Our drive to ensure Scotland fully exploits its renewable energy
potential depends on making the most of existing technology, like wind and
hydro, and also on taking the lead on the new technologies. We are supporting
the development of marine and biomass which will be crucial to our ability
to meet our renewable energy targets.”
Deputy Enterprise Minister Lewis Macdonald, August 2004
The Scottish Executive published a strategy document, “Securing a Renewable Future:
Scotland's Renewable Energy”, on 25th March 2003. This strategy confirmed their
existing 2010 target that 18% of electricity generated in Scotland should come
from renewable sources, and set an aspirational target of 40% by 2020.
The main driver behind renewable energy development in Scotland, now and over
the coming years, is the Renewables Obligation (Scotland).
