Government Policy in Wales
“Our existing Energy Strategy places climate change and the reduction
of carbon at the heart of decisions about the way in which we generate
and use energy. Whilst energy efficiency is one of our key aims, we also
need to increase the percentage of renewable generation to cater for the
remaining demand. Within the current UK energy market, onshore wind is
the principal renewable technology with potential to help us meet the 2010 target.”
Minister for Environment Planning and Countryside Carwyn Jones AM and Minister for
Economic Development and Transport Andrew Davies AM, joint statement, July 2004
The Welsh Assembly Government has set a target, to be met by 2010, to generate
4 terrawatt hours (TWhr) of electricity from renewable energy sources within Wales,
to mirror the UK national target of 10% of electrical power generation from renewables by 2010.
Draft renewable energy planning guidance in Wales called TAN 8 (Technical Advice Note 8) has
also identified strategic areas of search for wind farm development throughout Wales.
