What is Renewable Energy?
Hydro
Man has been using water as a source of power for centuries, from the early water wheel to the advanced versions of this ancient technology in use today.
Hydropower technology turns the potential energy of the water into electrical energy as it falls 'past' a turbine. Turbines are supplied with water drawn from either a reservoir or directly from an intake weir on a river. The latter are termed "run of the river" schemes which have no water storage reservoir and only run whenever the water flow in the river reaches over and above a certain volume.
We currently operate 12 hydroelectric power stations in the UK, which are capable of producing a total of 55MW of clean power. We also have a dedicated development team who are actively working to increase our portfolio of hydro schemes across the UK.
