Windy Standard became fully operational in November 1996 and at the time was Scotland's second largest wind farm.
It consists of 36 wind turbines each of 600 kilowatts (kW) maximum
output, manufactured by Nordtank A/S of Denmark. The wind farm has a combined maximum
power of 21.6 megawatts (MW).
It is located in the hills above Carsphairn Forest, some 9km north of Carsphairn
in Dumfries and Galloway. It was developed by npower renewables and
Fred.Olsen Ltd
and is operated by npower renewables on behalf of its joint owners Fred.Olsen Ltd
and npower renewables.
The wind farm covers an area of 350 hectares but the turbines themselves only take up 1%
of that land. The land on which the wind farm is situated is 500 to 680 metres above
sea level.
The area around the wind farm is very sparsely populated and bears no national or local
designation for nature conservation, but is within an agricultural designation - the
Western Southern Uplands Environmentally Sensitive area. The developers approached
Dumfries and Galloway Regional Council at an early stage and consulted widely to ensure
that the ecology and archaeology of the site was preserved. Consultees included:
Scottish Natural Heritage; Solway River Purification Board; Royal Society for the
Protection of Birds; Carsphairn Community Council and New Cumnock Community Council.
